What not to do and why a paid domain is important.

With all of the methods of web site promotion and web page marketing available, it is wise to know what not to do. There are tricks that many beginners may be tempted to try but shouldn’t. Search engines and directories have gotten very smart with detection techniques these days and will severely penalize those who perpetrate fraud.

In the “old days” it was easy to use these techniques. They still can be used but it is not recommended.

Invisible text, small text and unrelated Meta tags/keywords

Placing hundreds of keywords formatted in the color as the background. While visitors will not see it, search engines and directories will due to the fact that they don’t “see” background colors. This causes them to read the “invisible text” as keywords which place the site higher in the rankings and results.

Yes, this is still possible to do, but if you are caught, your site or even you as a person, may be banned from that particular directory/engine. It just isn’t worth the risk.

Another version of this is to use extremely small text that blends in with the background graphics of the page. It really isn’t “invisible” but is simply indistinguishable from the background. This carries the same penalty as invisible text; so again, it is not worth the risk.

One other common mistake made is the use of Meta tags or keywords that do not relate to the material on the site. As example, you know that adult related keywords are searched literally thousands of times each day. In the hopes of getting tons of visitors, you add these to your Meta tags or actually into the text of the page.

What really happens here is the visitors you receive from this are looking for something else unrelated to what you are trying to sell or promote. This is not a good thing to do since it correlates negatively to your visitor/click/conversion ratios.

The importance of a paid domain name:

When a visitor comes to your site, they are assessing you right from the start. As they browse through your products or services, they are looking at how the site is set up, the design and professionalism. One of the most important things is to use a paid domain name for your web site. Having http://www.xxxxxxx.freehostforever.com isn’t as good as http://www.xxxxxx.com. The shorter address looks better, more professional and builds trust in your company.

Having a paid domain has other benefits as well. Paid hosting is cheap these days and is faster and more reliable than free hosting. It also lends some authority to your site and shows visitors that you are serious. This can be a deciding factor in whether or not they send their money to you. Another reason is that it is easier to get a domain name into a registry, directory or search engine. Getting listed is already a tough task to accomplish, so why make it any harder? It makes good business sense to use a paid host as a way to make that all important first impression on your visitors.

These are all small things that can mean a lot to you in terms of traffic, visitors and sales.

Web site promotion is a complex process, and one of the oldest ways to promote a web site is by the exchange of Links. Link exchange is the original web site traffic generation system. In the “old days” before the rise of search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN ( and all the others that have followed since ) the only way to find a web site that you hadn’t already been to was to follow a link from another web site. Therefor if your site didn’t have many links pointing to it, it didn’t get much traffic.

Search engines still use links to find new sites and to help with the calculation of a web sites importance or value. So the exchanging of links is still a very usefull way to promote your site and increase its importance to the search engines.

There are three main types of link exchange. The first type is the reciprocal link, where you literally exchange a link with another web site. They put a link to you on their web site, you place one to them on yours.

The second type of link exchange is not really an exchange at all. A visitor to your site simply decides that they will put a link to your site on their site. Maybe they like the information that is presented on your site or they like your product etc. These one way links are considered to be more important by the search engines than reciprocal links are.

This leads us to the third type of link exchange. This method of link exchanging is an “artificial” type two link exchange. How can that be? Aren’t type two links voluntary links placed by a visitor? Yes they are, but that effect can be simulated by doing the following. Basically the idea is to create a “triangle” of links – and it requires at least three web sites for it to work. Picture( or draw ) a triangle with a web site at each of the three points of the triangle. The web sites are any three sites, and they each only link to one of the other sites. So if the sites were to exchange links in a clockwise direction around the triangle they form an “artificial” set of one way, voluntary links.

So thats the three main link exchange types, now how do you go about the actual process of link exchanging? Well its really quite simple. The best way to exchange links is to ask the other web site if they are interested in do so. Usually the request is sent via email or a form on the site you wish to exchange links with. Regardless of how you contact the webmaster of the other site, remember to be polite and to give them all the information they may need to complete the exchange. For example, briefly introduce yourself and your site, with a link back to your site so they can have a look at it. It is good practise to have their link on your site before you contact them for an exchange. Once you start exchanging links you will soon work out what to say and how to say it. Unfortunately many sites are very slow to respond to link exchange requests, so it can take a long time to create a link directory – but it is still well worth doing.

There are “rules” for creating a link directory that should be followed if you want to get the most benefit from it. The rules are very simple and they go something like this.

1. Only exchange links with sites that are relevant to your site. Why? Isn’t any link a good one? Yes, to an extent all links are good – but some are better than others. If you concentrate your link exchange efforts to sites that are relevant to yours, then your site will be seen by the search engines as more important to your topic than if your links went all over the place. It is also better for your visitors to have a link directory relevant to the topic of the site they are currently on.

2. Don’t make your directory pages too long. In other words, if your directory pages scroll for more than 2 or 3 screens they are too long. Why? Because very few people will scroll further than 2 or 3 screens. So if your link is at the bottom it will rarely be found and that doesn’t encourage a webmaster to exchange links with your site. A common limit is 25 links per page of the directory. If you have more links than 25 for any particular catagory a numbered “sub” page is the best way take the extra links. For exanple if you have a directory page called “Software.html”, then once you fill that page with 25 links, the new page could be called “Software-2.html” etc. Remember to include easy navigation within the link directory – its not there just for the search engine spiders..

So you’ve heard the term web site promotion and you’re saying to yourself, “I have a website, should I be more proactive in promotion?”

The answer to this question is yes. But of course, this leads to more questions:

* What is website promotion?
* Do I have to do it all myself?
* What if I’m not selling anything, is web site promotion still important to me?
* What are some of the more common techniques?

In this installment we’ll talk in depth about on-page factors and what you can do to increase your relevance with good site content.

So, starting at the top, we’ll try to explain some of this in non-technical terms:

Q: What is website promotion?
A: Website promotion is the combination of efforts which help you rank better against certain key phrases. In general, search engines will rank your web site on 2 major areas – on-page factors, and off-page factors.

On-page factors include your title, your description and keywords META data, your use of heading tags (i.e. H1, H2, et-cetera), ALT text on your images and of course, your body text (also known as web site copy).

The fact is, well executed on-page factors really equal good usability. Here are some examples of why:

Title tags: The title’s greatest value is to give a one-liner which can be picked up by the search engines and act as your first clue to prospective visitors what your page is all about. If for instance, your page is about Website Promotion, then “Website Promotion” is a very explanatory title. If it gets too long, the search engines tend to cut it off anyway, so remember, brevity is the soul of wit online too.

META Description: Many of the search engines, and some automated listing services will use your page title and description as the introduction of your site to viewers. For this reason, it’s important to have a brief, explanatory introduction. Taking the example above: “Website Promotion is the combination of efforts which help your site rank better for certain key phrases. Company X is an expert in Website Promotion.”

META Keywords: Think of keywords like the index of a book – if there’s something on the page you think is important, highlight it as a reference in your Keywords META tag. Other good uses of the Keywords tag are the inclusion of common misspellings, your company name, any thing which will help better describe your message to the user and the search engines.

Keywords have become less a factor for search engine ranking due to the abuses in which every keywords tag had the words “sex”, “money”, “get rich” – in short, keyword stuffing for high search traffic. Those search engine engineers are smart enough to know when they’re being toyed with and have started ignoring keywords. They still have value, but mostly to your users when they don’t know exactly what they’re looking for.

Heading tags: The internet was dreamed up and originally populated by engineers. If there’s one truism about engineers, they like structure. As such, they are prone to outlines. Think of every web page you create as an outline and you’ll understand the value of H1, H2, H3 tags in web site promotion. By defining a top-level heading, you’re saying this is my main body text, and I’m describing the whole thing and it’s therefore more important. As you continue through the text and you talk about sub-topics, second and third level headings indicate you are talking about sub, and sometimes sub-sub topics. Think “outline” and you’ll have no problem deciding what should be an H1, H2 or H3 tag.

ALT text: Way back when, the Internet wasn’t as fast as it is now. In the first browser I remember using, “Mosaic”, the images loaded in a separate viewer and you had to click a link to get them to appear. In this instance, having a good description of the image content was very important. Still today, a description of an image, or a description of the page to which you’re linking with an image are good ideas as ALT text. This way, those with sight challenges, and those who still use dial-up have a quick reference to know if they want to follow a link or load an image. Given the potential importance of ALT text, it is often misused for keyword stuffing in an attempt at better website promotion. From a usability standpoint, this isn’t so great. If your keyword phrase will help explain the image, or at worst won’t hurt the usability for those with text based browsers go ahead, but remember much of the on-page factors ranking is an attempt toward better usability.

Body text: Your body text is right up there in importance (perhaps most important) for both usability and web site promotion. Let’s face it, if your copy is no good you may attract a visitor one time, but they certainly won’t come back. Back to the engineers and their view of a web page: If you’ve ever read an academic paper, you know that often it seems quantity outweighs quality. As such, you’re rewarded for having a lot to say on one page. Hopefully, if it’s worth writing about it’s worth writing several hundred words about. The other thing the engineers seem to believe is that if a key phrase is important to you, you’ll repeat it a few times.

So, for both usability and web site promotion you want to assure you have a fair amount to say, that it will make good reading for your users and that you mention your key concept more than a couple times.

Too often, web site promotion needs outweigh usability and information needs.
